Britam Foundation Launches a Solar-Powered Pump at Miondoni Primary School

On 24th September 2024, Britam Foundation, in collaboration with Davis & Shirtliff, commissioned a solar-powered borehole pump at Miondoni Primary School in Machakos County. This initiative, part of the Lea Salama Initiative, reflects Britam’s vision of integrating sustainability into community development projects.

With 300 students, Miondoni Primary School had struggled to pump water due to high electricity costs. Many students come from underprivileged families, making it difficult for the school to cover operational expenses. The solar-powered system now allows the school to access clean water sustainably and at no ongoing electricity cost.

This solution not only provides clean water access, essential for preventing diseases, but it also demonstrates a commitment to long-term environmental sustainability. The solar-powered pump reduces reliance on fossil fuels and promotes eco-friendly practices while ensuring that children remain in school and thrive both physically and academically.

By integrating sustainable energy with the basic need for water, this project sets a precedent for holistic child development and community wellness through sustainable resource management.
