Britam Tower: Solar Energy Now Powers 50% of Kenya’s Tallest Green Building
Britam Tower in Upper Hill, the headquarters of Britam Holdings Plc and one of the tallest buildings in Africa at over 200 metres, has unveiled a rooftop solar system powerful enough to meet half of its own energy needs.
The Grade A skyscraper was the first building in Kenya to earn the prestigious EDGE certification from the International Finance Corporation (IFC) for its pioneering efficiency in energy, water, and materials. These innovations already help avoid nearly 1,000 tons of CO₂ emissions annually, setting a benchmark for sustainable office developments in Africa.
The new 250 kilowatt-peak (kWp) rooftop solar system, with another 50 kWp to follow, will generate about 420,000 kWh of clean power every year. That translates into significant electricity costs savings while preventing nearly 198 tons of CO₂ emissions — the same benefit as planting more than 10,800 trees annually.
“Britam Tower is not only a landmark on Nairobi’s skyline, but also a beacon of responsible business in Africa,” says Tom Gitogo, Group MD & CEO of Britam. “With this solar investment, we are reducing our carbon footprint, enhancing energy resilience, and creating long-term value for our shareholders, tenants, and the wider community. At Britam, sustainability is how we work, build, and lead.”
This solar milestone builds on Britam’s earlier success at Britam Centre in Upper Hill, where a solar carport generated 122,869 kWh in its first year of operation. That project alone saved millions in power bills and prevented 132 tons of CO₂ emissions — proof that clean energy investments deliver both financial and environmental returns.
In support of sustainable mobility, Britam has also installed Electric Vehicle (EV) charging ports at both Britam Centre and Britam Tower, reinforcing its commitment to greener cities and enabling tenants and visitors to transition to cleaner transport options.
As part of its Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) strategy, Britam is expanding renewable energy and resource efficiency initiatives across its portfolio. By combining innovation, partnerships, and measurable impact, the Group continues to be a sustainability leader in Africa’s financial services and real estate sectors.
